The Space Between Us

She needed to cry.
She needed somewhere to put her sadness.
So I sat with her.
I listened as her words became heavier and her breathing became uneven. I held space for her the only way I knew how—by staying. By listening. By allowing her pain to exist without rushing to make it smaller.
What I didn't realize was that I was holding more than her pain.
As the call came to an end, my arms began to shake. Anxiety climbed into my chest, and when the silence finally settled, so did the weight I had been carrying.
I broke.
I struggled to find words in the thickness of the silence, left holding what remained after someone else's grief had been spoken aloud.
Then I took a deep breath.
And I realized there was someone quietly holding space for me.
She didn't rush to fix me.
She didn't fill the silence with advice.
She simply stayed.
Later, I found myself thinking about that moment.
What happened in that room?
Why did it stay with me?
I think it's because of the invisible space that exists between two people.
The space where grief is held.
Where silence speaks.
Where compassion lives.
Where healing quietly begins.
We often believe loving someone means finding the right words.
We search for advice. We offer reassurance. We try to make sense of pain because watching someone we care about suffer can leave us feeling helpless.
But what if our greatest gift isn't knowing what to say?
What if it's simply being willing to stay?
Maybe holding space isn't about carrying someone else's pain.
Maybe it's about reminding them they don't have to carry it alone.
Some of the most meaningful moments in my life haven't been marked by brilliant advice or perfect answers.
They've been marked by quiet presence.
By someone willing to witness my story without trying to rewrite it.
Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer another person isn't a solution.
It's ourselves.
Sometimes...
love looks like simply holding the space between us.
